“Pride is a spiritual cancer that devours families, destroys marriages, divides churches and corrupts governments.”
In the month of June, every year, we often see and hear the word PRIDE, more than any other time. People are encouraged to be comfortable in who they are and even encouraged to flaunt their sinful choices!
However the Bible tells us:
“Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.” Proverbs 16:5
The definition of PRIDE is as follows: An inordinate self-esteem; an unreasonable feeling of superiority as to one’s talents, beauty, wealth, rank, and so forth; disdainful behavior or treatment; insolence or arrogance of demeanor; haughty bearing.
To take pride in an accomplishment is not necessarily wrong. The kind of pride that is wrong from the standpoint of Scripture is the smug feeling of being superior to others or thinking that most people are stupid when compared to yourself. Proverbs shows the outcome of that kind of pride:
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18
Pride has a tendency to creep in when we are not praying and reading God’s precious Word! Without our Savior, we are NOTHING and we must resist the temptation to think that we have accomplished anything on our own!
“For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” Luke 14:11
As Believers, we must make every effort to choose HUMILITY. We must YIELD all that we are to God and let Him accomplish GREAT things THROUGH us!
“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” 1 Peter 5:6
